About Kathleen Arleth
Kathleen Arleth, of Somers Point, NJ, has developed as an artist over many years, initially working in a variety of media that included oil, acrylic and pen and ink. Kathleen found her connection and her focus in the watercolor medium – painting landscapes, streetscapes and waterscapes of places near and far.
In addition to watercolors, the artist has produced the Somers Point Series of pen and ink series in 11×14 size including nostalgic Bayfront buildings like the “Old Anchorage”. Charlies’ Bar, The Clam Bar, Bayshores and recently a print of The Breakfast Shop.
Kathleen has participated in many workshops and classes over the years most notably with regional and international watercolor artists.
The artist has, during the last several years, produced and continues to produce watercolor images of coffee shops and cafes entitled Café Series. These images reflect the intimacy of the café and the relationships of those who frequent them. She continues to discover those special places of meeting and conversation in her travels both in the United States and Europe and to include them in her Café Series.
Kathleen has traveled and painted extensively on location toting her watercolors wherever she travels – and has captured the intimacy and the particular features of the cities and countries she has visited, returning to those places time and again. Her work depicts the waterfronts of the Atlantic coast, the charm of the Florida coast, the cities and countryside of Ireland, the sun splashed islands of Italy and the streetscapes of European cities.
Arleth feels that her work as an artist means continuously developing her style which can range from a realistic approach to a loose style depending on the subject matter at hand. Kathleen mostly enjoys the feeling of working on location where she connects intimately with her subject matter and where her paintings emerge from the reality of the scene to the impression on the paper. The first stroke of color begins the experience. When someone views the work, I would like that person to feel connected to the setting and to experience that same sense of place that is offered in the painting.
The artist has received several awards including first place in professional watercolor in the Atlantic County Senior Art Show in May 2012 and in September 2010, Best in Watercolor in the Ocean City Art League exhibit Windows. She has participated in several one-woman shows including An Artist’s Decade, at the Educational Testing Service Chauncey Conference Center, Princeton, NJ; the Gallery at Milton & Betty Katz JCC, Margate, NJ; in group shows at the Ocean City Fine Arts League. Kathleen welcomes your visit to Great Bay Gallery to view her work; all work is available for purchase to begin or add to your collection of fine art.
Kathleen was also selected to exhibit in Ocean City Art Center’s annual juried photography shows in 2021, 2022 and in 2023.
